Chritmas Carols with the Stars

Leee John will get Christmas celebrations off to a star-studded start at TV Times Christmas Carols with the Stars in aid of Leukaemia Research, the UK's leading blood cancer charity. Leee will sing with London gospel choir Ob-sessions who will join a host of celebrities from much-loved TV shows including The Bill, Coronation Street and Emmerdale at the event on 8 December 2008 at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Roots Of UK Black Music Documentary

Scopitone Ltd in conjunction with LJ Music have begun a documentary on the history of UK black music under the title Flashback. Starting with music from the late 70s and 80s for the first volume. Featuring artists like Loose Ends, Eddy Grant, Junior Giscombe, Jackie Graham, Level 42, Roachford, and many more artists, also featuring DJs, producers, and industry people from the time.

Leee had a spectacular three week RTL Disco 2008 Tour in France starring alongside The Village People, Boney M, Ottawan "Disco" Santa Esmeralda, Gibson Brothers, Evelyn Thomas, Weather Girls, Patrick Hernandez, Anita Ward and Miquel Brown.
 

Leee John visits SOS Children in France

 

On Wednesday 4^th June, the children and staff of SOS Children's Village Marseille received a surprise visit from Lee John. Lee was in France on a whirlwind national tour and kindly took time out from his busy schedule to spend time at the Village - playing with children and distributing signed photographs.

 

The children and staff were extremely happy to see him and Bernard Roset, the Village Director said "Leee spent time with our children and was very kind and sensitive. He visited a family house and even gave some of our older children tickets for his show. We were so happy to see him."

 

SOS Children's Village Marseille is the largest Village in France and cares for more than 60 children.

 

Leee John continues to support SOS Children in many ways and has just released his new book; 'From Within the Heart' which describes his experiences at SOS Children in South Africa. The book can be bought online at Amazon with proceeds going directly to the charity.

Recorded live at the New Morning Club in Paris, during the JVC Jazz Festival, Leee presents his Soul/Jazz project 'Feel my Soul'. With his formidable jazz quartet he made an immediate impact on the public consisting of die hard jazz fans and journalists.

Attending was David Nathan 'British Amabassador of Soul', of 'Blues and Soul' fame (the # 1 UK black music magazine). Leee, backed by Dr. John Watson (keys/vocals), Paul Jones (drums), Levil Neville (bass), Miles Danso (flute, sax) took the audience on a musical journey starting with the self-penned 'Flamingo Bleu' and ending with a harrowing rendition of his anthem 'The Truth'.

The Parisian crowd were blown away by Leee's mastery while presenting the tracks with such command as if he'd been working in the jazz genre for decades. In the end the public was taken back with a maginificent jazz version of 'Just an Illusion' and after a standing ovation, Leee came back to present the cherry on the cake: a 10 minute rendition of the unreleased track 'The Truth'. This tune simply begged for audience participation and participating they did, for about 15 minutes!

The live cd consists of 12 tracks including the 'Feel my Soul' tracks plus 'Illusion' and 'the Truth'.

 

A TRIBUTE TO PAUL 'TUBBS' WILLIAMS 9th April 2007

The sad and untimely passing of Paul 'Tubbs' Williams on the 10th January grieved many of his former collaborators and friends.

A benefit was set up on 9th april by a circle of dear friends of the deceased bass player among which Jean Paul 'Bluey' Maunick (Incognito), Kenny Wellington, Breez Mckrieth, David Baptiste (Light of the World/Beggar and Co) and Camelle Hinds (Central Line).

The tribute took place at Dingwalls, London to soulfully remember Paul's contribution to music as well as bringing together of some of the most influential artists in UK Jazz Funk and Soul. Paul was founding member of Light of the World and Incognito. On stage that evening : Incognito, Light of the World (The Original Founding members) Beggar and Co, Central Line, Noel Mckoy (JTQ/McKoy) Courtney Pine, Orphy Robinson, Andy Gangandeen, Leee John (Imagination) Junior Giscombe, The JazzCotech Dancers, Marc Mac(4Hero) and many more...

Before Imagination took shape, Leee had already worked with Paul (Light of the world) and on and off the two would meet professionally and otherwise. Paul 'Tubbs' Williams was featured at Imagination's fifth anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in 1986.

....when Leee first mentioned that he had cut a jazz record in France, I was a little surprised. That surprise turned to delight when I heard the result last year. ''Feel my Soul'' displayed a maturity and command of the jazz idiom that suggested he'd been working in the genre for decades. Yes, there is a touch of Al Jarreau, a hint of Bobby Mc Ferrin, a dash of George Benson but in its essence, it was Leee John doing Leee John, and he did it well, very well.

A review of the show from Richard de France :

'I was there accompanied by my wife and JP; the gig was a fantastic live rendition of the 'Feel my Soul' album mixed with some jazzy versions of Imagination tracks (Illusion-Music and Lights) and a few unreleased gems of Leee John (The Truth, Utopia, Lover,...); 2 spectators were invited on stage by Leee to guest vocal and singing they did.

The musicians were outstanding, especially John 'Dr' Watson on the piano blending suberbly with Leee's vocal prowess. The gig lasted for about 2 hours and although accoustics were not perfect it was a fantastic musical journey deserving accolades. Leee looked very at ease, France is definitely his second home. His new album is a gem and wel on its way to becoming a standard.'

A tremendous gig at Bush Hall in front of people from the industry, press , fellow artists, family and friends officially lauched the long awaited first album of Leee John. Sensuality, The thin line, Small World , ... sounded brilliant in a packed Bush Hall. Leee seemed relaxed and in an uplifting mood, he ended the gig with a sublime jazz version of ... yes Just an Illusion and a chilling rendition of the yet to be released anthem 'The Truth'.

Alan Bates , head of Candid Records, thanked Leee afterwards for the brilliant performance and craftmanship of the jazzamataz quartet; Stefane Peyrolo , brilliant cameraman/director of the 2 hour DVD filmed the event, Tony Hadley was there to support his 'Reborn' friend, among the many other guests were: Dee Vaz (Leee's sound engineer, co-composer ) , Adam Pendse, Steve 'the Greek' Charalambous, fan and collaborator in Bognor Tony Deacon and son Christopher, fan Barry (aka Bazza) and his sister Tina and loads more journalists (Blues and Soul, QW...) colleagues .... former Imagination custome designer Brian , the list was endless.

The launch was celebrated in style at a bubbling after party!!

The wait has been long, the work has been hard, the acclamation will be unanimous!!!
31st October a dream of many of fan, friend , music lover will come true!!

FEEL MY SOUL ON Candid Records

The scat vocals on ‘Tell me do you want my love’, the jazz interlude in ‘Point of no return’ at the Hammersmith concerts, a meeting with John ‘Dr’ Watson in a jazz club, the Leee John Jazz project : this jazz album has been in the heart and mind of Leee for more than 2 decades. Now it finally sees the light of day ready to create the quiet storm.

With this album Leee shows how wide his vocal range is, using the vocal chords as an extra instrument on newly written songs and some alltime jazz standards. Songs like ‘Sensuality’, ‘U never know’ were written years ago by Leee but kept in the pipeline as he felt they should be heard in a style that would suit them. Together with Gina Smith, longtime friend and manager, he wrote the jubilating track ‘Jazzamataz’ already sounding as a classic. Ella Fitzegerald’s heartfelt ‘Strange Fruit’ and Cole Porter’s 'Someone to watch over me' are not plainly covered but Leee approaches them in a way they become his own without ever losing the soul of the original writing.

Pop stars Leee John, Jaki Graham, Junior Giscombe and top Radio Jackie DJ Neil Long make up the superb musical bill for a night of great entertainment in November that will also raise much-needed funds for the Cancer Unit at Kingston Hospital

A Fantastic 1980s Soul/Funk Night for Kingston Hospital Cancer Unit Appeal, on Thursday 11 November at The Works Night Club in Kingston. Neil Long and the Radio Jackie Road Show will be providing the music throughout the night along with live performances from Leee John, Jaki Graham and Junior Giscombe. Boogie the night away, from 9pm through till 2am, to classics such as Round and Around, Just an Illusion and Mamma Used to Say.

The Kingston Can Appeal has raised £2.25 million so far, but still has some way to go to achieve its target of £3.5 million to build and equip a purpose-built patient-centred dedicated cancer unit that provides prompt and efficient treatment of a variety of forms of cancer.

Kingston Hospital already has a superb cancer management team that specialises in breast, colorectal and lung cancers. The hospital is now keen to expand the range of treatment services and enhance the facilities and environment in which patients are treated. The new unit will be a caring and private environment where patients will receive specialist cancer care and treatment under one roof, without having to continually move around the hospital and travel to other hospitals.

The fundraising event was inspired by pop star and ex-Imagination lead singer Leee John, whose close friend and tour manager Mark Uttley was recently a patient at Kingston Hospital. Leee says ‘I was hugely impressed by the care Mark received here and the terrific and forward-thinking staff at Kingston Hospital. In the knowledge that 1 in 3 of us will get cancer in some form in our lifetime, I was determined to help this terrific hospital bring its treatment facilities right up-to-date and improve further the chances of saving more lives. I would love to have an annual event like this so we can keep the support going even when the unit is built.’

Leee has rallied his friends Jaki Graham and Junior Giscombe around to get involved, too, and together they make for an energetic bill for this fundraising event. Local FM station Radio Jackie is providing fantastic support, too, with DJ Neil Long hosting the evening, and the station is also running a competition for a lucky winner to have dinner with Leee and then come along to the event with a group of friends. LEEE GOES JAZZ - JAZZ ALBUM RECORDING FRANCE

For the past month Leee was busy recording his first jazz album in France. Cristal Records was enthused by Leee's plans and under the direction of Eric Debegue with sound engineer/co-producer François Gaucher Leee started recording.

Studio assistant in charge was Ludovic Guichard, associate producer the ever present Dee Vaz (crazy but for real), John Watson on piano , Stephen Kerecki on bass , Stephane Huchaed on drums and Jean Noel Godard percussion. Leee and his posse recorded some 20+ jazzy tunes, some originals, some reworkings of his own recordings and some jazz anthems.

The whole event was filmed by a professional team headed by film director Stephane Peyrolo and a DVD will be released of the whole event including additional material filmed in France.

No release date has been offically announced but Leee is aiming for an autumn release.

The event was a celebration of Soul , Disco, Funk. On stage with Leee : Tavares, the Trammps, Rose Royce and a whole lot more, the acclamation was tremendous, Leee met a lot of fans after the show all very interested in new things to come.

Gigs

Leee just returned from France where he, Leroy and Algee performed in 'La Roche Posay'. The week before they travelled from Venice to Rome and gave some scorching performances. Our local report Marina (aka Mary) was present at 'Le Dune Village' in Rome and witnessed the Leee's performance in front of a crowd of 1700; the music was unleashed in tropical temperatures (34° and more) and the capacity crowd was blown away by the sound of Leee John and Imagination.
Leee will return to Italy, more specifically to SARDINIA, the exclusive island for a CONCERT!! Together with the Leee John band he will conquer the posh resort in the same vain he did last year and bring some 'Passion' to inhale by the posh crowds.

A review and some exclusive pix from Marina and her husband Enzo will be put online the coming days.

PROJECTS

Leee is currently sorting out some deals for upcoming projects : aside from the 'Leee John Album' some exclusive releases among which the 'dance project' are up for licensing in Europe and Japan, beside these Leee has plans to release a mega-compilation on 'the Legend of Imagination' including some unreleased Imagination sounds. A DVD release on 'Imagination' will coincide with this release. Some propositions coming from the 'Musical Scene', Leee and his theatrical agents are reviewing these opportunities so there is a chance you might see Leee on stage in London during the chilling evenings in winter. As this gruelling summer moves on the pipeline looks more and more interesting.

The latest release of the britfunksouljazz legends features a track written by Leee and Bill Sharpe last year. Fool in love , track 10 on the album, is a smooth soulful jazzy tune sung beautifully by Leee and Jill Saward (Shak's leading lady); another track Angel (I'll be there) written by Bill and Leee didn't make it on the album. For nearly a year we have been announcing this release and we're glad it's finally there.

Leee recorded a couple of tracks with Bill Sharpe, these have been announced by this website for almost a year, well the wait is over, the jazzfunk album has just been released in Japan and features the smooth track 'Fool in Love' with Leee as guest vocalist in a duet with Jill Sayward , Shakatak's lead singer.

Leee is currently touring France and Italy (1,2 & 3rd August) We have our reporter in Rome who will be covering the gig in 'Le Dune Village'

The July gigs in France went really well and the private gig in Essex was a gas :
Leee, East 17 and the Real Thing performed for charity. The posh crowd saw Leee performing some of Imagination's greatest hits and some tracks from his upcoming album. One of the highpoints was his rendition of 'Just my Imagination' , a track he performed during the 'Reborn tour' and was re-recorded by Leee as well as 'Betcha bey Golly wow', at present we don't have any more details on a 'double A side' release of those two soul classics.

Also in July, Leroy , who has been dancing and performing with Leee for the past 8 years or so, got married.

At the present time Leee is busy meeting up with companies to sort out upcoming releases, some of the special editions are up for licensing in Japan and Europe (NOT North America);

A great party was had at the Cobden Club, dinner was delicious and the choons were thrown at the participating crowd of friends and family by DJ Gilly who Leee met in the eighties in the same club. They went down memory lane and looked confidently into the future.

He first shed the light in the fabulous Matrixx club in Nijmegen and later on set the Locomotion club in Zoetermeer on fire.

We were fortunate to have 2 fantastic local reporters : Gert-Jan and his lovely sister Dorieke, both have been Imagination fans since day 1 and saw many a show in Holland where Imagination were regular guests in venues (remember 'Vredeburg concert in Utrecht!) and on the popular 'Soul Show' of legendary Dj Ferry Maat.

Leee John says he may team up with fellow Reborn In The USA contestants Tony Hadley and Peter Cox for a tour of the UK.
John, who formed an unlikely friendship with ex-Spandau singer Tony Hadley, says he has also been offered a role in Sean Connery's latest film.

"We may do a Rat Pack tour with me, Tony Hadley and Peter Cox which will be really, really good. We'll do our own stuff and dress up in the old suits.

"A promoter is interested in doing it in Britain and Europe at the end of the year. Tony is very like Frank Sinatra and Peter is cool like Dean Martin. I'll be Sammy Davis."

"Tony and I really bonded even though he's on the phone all the time. We called him Two-Hand Tone. Tony was gutted I left this week. We're total opposites but we got on well. I wanted to get to New York so we could do a Rat Pack routine there."

John added: "I've been asked to play a drama teacher in a new film called The Magic Isles made by the people who did Billy Elliot. It's about a young Scottish boy who wants to get into a drama school.

The distinguished company are preparing to leave for the USA, departure 02th March 03.
First stop : New Orleans.

A special page 'Reborn in the USA' will give you all the latest news , gossip and results, Leee will keep you informed of any special happenings during the build-up. We will also give you insight in what is being published on this 'hot' event!
To start off things , here's an article that appeared in the Daily Mail, and an short interview of Leee.

Leee John

Leee John, formed dance trio Imagination in 1981. The group notched up a decade's worth of hits incl. "Just An Illusion" which reached No2 in 1982. He runs his own production company, and has had success as a solo artist. He's hoping to break into acting.

My first earnings from Imagination was a cheque for £15.000. I went straight to Harrods and bought a wolf fur coat, which I wore constantly. I've still got it in the loft. The first time I realised I'd made it was in the mid-1980's: while playing to a Spanish audience of 15.000, I caught a glimpse of myself on a massive screen and just thought: "Wow, I'm famous". Fame had a huge impact. I'd been supplementing my income from the theatre working as singing waiter. Then I wrote our first hit, "Body Talk", on my mum's kitchen table in 1981, and suddenly screaming schoolgirls were chasing me everywhere we went. We were even mobbed in far-flung places such as Bratislava and Russia. It was amazing. I got to meet influential figures such as Princess Di - who joked about our see-through outfits- and Nelson Mandela, who had us over for dinner; Winnie cooked. Things started to change in 1990 when our manager Brian Longley was killed in a road accident. His death hit me hard, and my priorities changed.

I formed my own production company and started promoting other acts, although I missed the limelight. I decided to do the series for the exposure because I want the public to know Leee John rather than 'that guy from Imagination '. Any performer would leap at the chance to sing to new audiences on an all-expenses-paid trip to the US.

Other news

'Passion' is up for a release on Vinyl in Belgium, a hot dance label is interested in releasing it with some extra mixes!
Besides building the basis for the upcoming release(s), Leee is working on different projects , among which a jazz release;
also some interesting collaborations have finalized, no details yet;
gigs are being ordered , we are still waiting confirmation for a show in Birmingham on 31st january

SHAKATAK & LEEE JOHN

Leee and Bill Sharpe have worked together on a couple of tracks, among which , 'Fool in love' which will be put on Shakatak's forthcoming album , to be released spring 2003, Japan. We will inform you in time when the album will be available. The track is a jazzy soulful tune, Leee first recorded last year as a solo effort but now he has re-recorded the track in the studio with Jill , lead singer of Shakatak. So, on the album will be the 'duet version'. No confirmation on what's going to happen with 'Angel (I'll be there)'.

THE FASCINATION & DANCE VAULT CLASSICS EXCLUSIVE CD's

On sale via the website are these exclusive cds that were recorded by Leee himself , winter 2002.

On the 'Fascination' cd you will hear the original masters the way they should have been released BUT where not! The album has thirteen tracks , eleven + 2 extra mixes. The 'Dance Vault Classics' is a cd with rare and often unreleased mixes from grooves that Leee worked on in the nineties. The cd has THIRTEEN TRACKS , the different songs are put on the back sleeve but it is worth noting that some of the songs will come in different versions among which 'Pearls'....all tracks have been mixed so that really makes it a party cd. A special feature page (WITH AUDIO FILES) will be put online so you can have a listen before you order! IMPORTANT : it also features a song Leee did in 2001 and was announced but never came out : 'Could have been you' (with L. Fontana)!!!

LEEE/IMAGINATION in Germany - Gummersbach

A jolly good time was had on Saturday, 11th January in Gummersbach, Germany where Leee and his feline dancers gave a posh show for a VIP happening organised by local TV station and with a lot of german personalities enjoying the champagne and other bubbles!! Check some hot shots from the gig in the 'Review' page.

The year has just started and Leee has received very positive news in Switzerland where he was invited by a record company to spend some time off in the mountains, let's wait and see but it looks very promising as they say. We will be revamping the site as we go along and have prepared some interesting things , so keep an eye on the site. For those of you who like to have/read everything check out the biography of L. Allen Jones on Freddie Mercury where Leee is featured in one of the chapters.

IMPORTANT

Finally, after a decade, Imagination's penultimate effort 'the Fascination of the Physical' is finally available. Those of you who have the version that was released in Europe in 92 (Indisc, New Music, RCA Victor (Jap), will be over the moon to finally hear the Master Edition.

The story behind 'Fascination' :

In 91 'a version' of the album was hastily sent to different distribution companies all over Europe as the recording company wanted a 'quick' release. At the time, Leee had finalized the 'definite' version which 'should' have been put on the album. Before they could intervene the 'draft' version was in the shops. When listening to the version of 92 you cannot help noticing the uneven sound quality of some of the tracks ('best of my life' being the worst). Also Leee's versions are musically of superior quality and the sound is wicked. This album was the last album in which Ashley Ingram was involved, in fact Ashley hardly worked on the album. During the couple of years preceding the release, Ashley was busy working on the first album of Des'ree and apart from co-writing a couple of tracks, the album is mainly the work of Leee & a posse of new collaborators among which Adam Pendse (whose first collaboration with Imagination had been 'Give into Love') , Toby Baker, Rod Gammons, Dee Vaz, Will Mowat , member Peter Royer & Junior 'Mama used to say' Grisombe,.... In the spring of 91 Ashley left Imagination and Nat Augustin (of 'Light of the World') came on board. The version for sale EXCLUSIVELY via the Website has the original Master tracks : apart from 'the night we loved' the versions you will hear are quiet different to the released ones. Some of the entries are a far cry from the 92 edition : check out 'best of my life', 'I like it', 'Work',.. the song 'Alone again', not on the european releases, is the closing track in yet a different version than the one on the Japanese release! Enjoy!

NEW CD : Leee John Dance Vault (unreleased, undiscovered)

Leee has decided to put some rare grooves, unreleased mixes of some of the songs he wrote in the nineties for sale. This cd will come in an original cover. If everything goes according to plan another cd with even 'rarer' and 'older' stuff on will be for sale , Leee walking down Memory Lane(!)
